They found it hiding in a box ...
Capping off a summer of literary shockwaves, the long-lost unpublished book by Dr. Seuss, What Pet Should I Get?, went on sale Tuesday.
The book is about two children who set out to a local pet store to pick out a new pet, and features the same brother and sister duo from One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.
The book first turned up in 1993 while the home of Dr. Seuss (Theodore Geisel) and his wife Audrey was being renovated, but was lost again. Audrey Geisel found the book a second time in a box in 2013.
So why was it never published in the first place?
Cathy Goldsmith, vice president and associate publishing director for Random House/Golden Books Young Readers, says it's not because the book was not in shape to be published. It's more likely Geisel became interested in the creative direction toward the end of the book, when the children begin daydreaming about imaginary pets. The book that followed was One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.
"So Ted got so caught up in One Fish that he lost his heart to the second book and just forgot about the first. He was famous for working on multiple projects at once, especially in the golden years," she told Macleans.
It's a far cry from the hand-wringing caused by this summer's Go Set A Watchman, the follow-up novel (first draft?) to Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. Controversy surrounds the book's provenance, a debate not likely to be settled any time soon.
