A police department is getting a lot of attention after an officer helped a member of his community who had fallen on hard times.
Samuel Meixueiro was spotted sleeping in Roeland Park, Kansas. Someone thought it was suspicious, so they called police. But officers soon found that the man was just trying to make a living after losing his home.
"Sometimes I have to sleep outside because I want to keep my job," Meixueiro told WDAF-TV. "That's just how it is."
He says he’s had a checkered past, and because of that, a lot of doors have been shut in his face. He has lost his home and has been sleeping in a church.
Meixueiro said he spends about 2 1/2 hours walking from Kansas City to Mission for work every day. That’s more than seven miles. Then after his shift is over, he walks back. His round-trip commute is about five hours.
On Tuesday, he took a break in a nearby park before work and someone called police. Instead of disciplining the hardworking man, Officer Zach Stamper listened to his story and sympathized with him.
Stamper drove Meixueiro to work that day but didn’t stop there. Thirty minutes later, the officer came back to Meixueiro’s office with a bike and a duffel bag to help him carry his things.
“I cried. I couldn’t believe it. Things are so hard for me right now. Any kind of help is just a blessing,” Meixueiro said. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
