An Orlando shooting survivor got a big surprise from his favorite pop superstar when he appeared on the "Ellen" show this week.
Tony Marrero was invited to Ellen DeGeneres’ show to share his story of the Pulse nightclub shooting in June, which claimed 49 lives.
He told DeGeneres that he listened to Katy Perry’s song “Rise” to get him through the difficult weeks and months after the shooting.
In typical DeGeneres style, Katy Perry was waiting backstage the whole time. She came out to surprise Marrero, and within minutes, they both were in tears.
“I just want to say thank you for everything you do,” Marrero told the trembling pop star. “Your lyrics to that song helped me from the day that I was in the hospital all the way until now. You’re amazing.”
Perry said it was her honor to be a “light” for Marrero during his dark days. Then she gave him a big surprise that no one was expecting.
“I heard that you want to go to film school, so I personally want to pay for your first year at film school,” Perry said.
