Reno, who served as President Bill Clinton's attorney general for eight years, was at the center of several controversies, including the deadly 1993 raid on David Koresh's Waco, Texas, compound, and the seizure of 5-year-old Cuban immigrant Elian Gonzalez in 2000.

Reno also launched a bid for Florida governor in 2002 but lost to Bill McBride in the Democratic primary. The incumbent, Republican Gov. Jeb Bush, won re-election.
Former Attorney General Eric Holder lauded Reno's work at a 2009 ceremony.
"I don't know how many times she said to me, 'What's the right thing to do,'" Holder said, according to CNN. "It was never 'what's the easy thing,' 'what's the political thing,' or '(what's) the expedient thing to do.'"
People flocked to social media Monday to pay tribute to Reno. Here's what they were saying.
