Palo Alto police say an iPhone's tracking app located a stolen car, and a suspect was later arrested.
San Jose police put out a call for assistance Monday evening after a black 2013 Audi S5 coupe with the key left in the ignition was stolen. The car was equipped with the LoJack stolen vehicle recovery system, but the owner had also left an iPhone with a "Find My Phone" tracking app inside the glove compartment.
Using the iPhone app, San Jose police tracked the unoccupied Audi to the Town & Country Village shopping center in nearby Palo Alto.
Officers had a description of the suspect and kept the car under watch but began processing the car for evidence after the suspect failed to return.
Meanwhile, an officer spotted a man who matched the suspect's description walking into a CVS Pharmacy. Officers said they confronted the suspect, identified as Tony Cota, 44, of Fresno, and he had the key to the Audi in his pocket -- along with methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
Cota was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of vehicle theft, felony possession of narcotics and misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia.
