The family of a 6-month-old baby girl is heartbroken.

Police say Brylee Houghton fell off a bed and died after a television then fell on top of her Wednesday. Action News spoke to the child's great-grandmother, Missy Willis, who rushed the baby known as smiley Brylee to the local fire station for help.

Willis said the tragic accident occurred while Brylee was sleeping on a bed inside a camper parked in the yard of her home on Lost Acre Road.

She said Brylee's parents had recently fallen on hard times and had been living in the camper for a week while they worked to recover. Brylee's mother was in the hospital for a minor operation Wednesday when her father laid the sleeping infant down on a bed. Later, he found his youngest daughter had fallen 4 feet off the bed and somehow a nearby television then landed on top of her.

She was rushed to a nearby fire station and airlifted to UF Health Jacksonville, where the 6-month-old, already known for her bright smile and loving, budding personality, later died.

Brylee's older sister is now staying with relatives at the request of her parents, who are cooperating with an investigation by the Clay County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Unfortunately, there have been many similar investigations in our area already this year. Action News has learned 25 children have already have died in the Northeast Florida district just this year and 15 of those deaths were sleep-related. DCF said that is a 20 percent increase over last year. The department called it a disturbing trend.

Neighbors are now working to assist the family with funeral costs for little Brylee. Click here to learn more about the GoFundMe page that has been set up.
