Hayden Garrett Paul Miller, 21, of Bloomington, was arrested July 19 and charged with one count of animal cruelty, WBIW reported. Miller appeared in Monroe County Circuit Court for his initial hearing Thursday and pleaded not guilty, the television station reported. He was released Thursday after posting a $500 bond Thursday, according to court records.

According to court documents, a resident at a Bloomingdale apartment complex called police after hearing loud thuds, followed by an animal crying in pain, WXIN reported. The resident said it sounded like a dog was being thrown against the wall, according to court documents.

Miller told police he had punished the puppy, named Max, for urinating on his bed, WBIW reported.

An animal control officer took custody of the puppy and a veterinarian said the animal was bleeding in both his eyes and had bruising inside his ears, according to WXIN. The vet said the injuries were the result of head trauma or strangulation and Miller was arrested, the television station reported.

Miller is due again in court Sept. 24, WBIW reported.
