Several officers helped Smith survive the life-threatening incident and Channel 2's Tom Jones was there as her husband Tracy got the chance to thank them saving his wife Friday.
"For me you guys are heroes," Tracy Smith told the officers Friday. "And I know you didn't have to. I know you say you were just doing your job."
Smith told Jones his wife might not be here if not for the officers and that's why he wanted to shake every hand.
"You were right where you needed to be at the right time and you helped my wife and I thank you so much sir," Smith said as he thanked the off-duty officer who broke his hand breaking out the window to get to his trapped wife. "You jumped in there. You were there to help in aid and I thank you. She remembered that."
Police Chief Franklin Allen said this shows how hard his guys work to serve the community.
"I'm really proud of these guys and the job they did," Allen said.
"There's some good people out here that are behind the badge," Smith said.
Monique Smith, who works for the Clayton County DA's office, continues to recuperate in the hospital.
