Of the many hot topics taking center stage for the 2020 presidential election, age of the candidates is one of them. The ages of the 20 Democratic candidates range from 37 to 77, and include candidates who, if elected, would be either the oldest or the youngest president on Inauguration Day.
As of April 25, 2019, these are the ages of the Democratic hopefuls:
Pete Buttigieg, 37
Eric Swalwell, 38
Tulsi Gabbard, 38
Seth Moulton, 40
Julian Castro, 44
Wayne Messam, 44
Andrew Yang, 44
Tim Ryan, 45
Beto O’Rourke, 46
Cory Booker, 49
Kirsten Gillibrand, 52
Kamala Harris, 54
John Delaney, 56
Amy Klobuchar, 58
Marianne Williamson, 66
John Hickenlooper, 67
Jay Inslee, 68
Elizabeth Warren, 69
Joe Biden, 76
Bernie Sanders, 77
Insider recently conducted a poll asking voters, "In your view, what's the ideal age for a major party nominee for president?" Both the median and average response was 49.
The average age of the 20 Democratic candidates is 53. If voted into the highest office, the two oldest candidates, Sanders and Biden, would be 79 and 78, respectively, when sworn in.
On the other end of the spectrum, the youngest candidates -- Buttigieg, Gabbard and Swalwell -- would be 39, 39 and 40, respectively, on Inauguration Day.
For perspective: A candidate must be at least 35 to run for president. The youngest person to assume the office was Theodore Roosevelt, who was 42 when he was sworn in. The oldest was current President Donald Trump, who was 70 on the day of his inauguration.
