UPDATE: According to the Daily Mail, a homeless man, identified as Joe Zhou, 57, has been evicted from his bridge living space. He was taken to an area homeless shelter, but has since taken up residence at a 24-hour McDonald's. Zhou claims he lived in the bridge space for about a year. Read the original story below.
New York Citys Manhattan Bridge is becoming a shanty town, according to a recent New York Post report. Some of the citys homeless population have carved out living spaces within the framework of the bridge.
The New York Post report refers to the spaces as coffin-sized, with some of the living quarters only accessible by climbing a chain-link fence. Scraps of plywood serve as a door to individual spaces, offering those inside a bit of privacy.

The homeless camp on the bridge was discovered when a bicyclist called the police, believing that a person climbing the fence was a suicide jumper. When police investigated, the man, who spoke little English, explained through an interpreter that he was living on the bridge.
According to the New York Post, a one-bedroom apartment in the nearby DUMBO neighborhood would cost approximately $2900 per month. Even the smallest of New York City apartments, a 100-square-foot studio in Harlem, runs about $1275 per month.
The citys Department of Transportation says it will monitor the situation.
