At 2 months, Jack Moxey was diagnosed with the birth defect craniosynostosis, which means one or more of the joints between the bones of a baby's skull closes before the brain is fully formed.

Jack's parents, Lauren and Jonathan, had two options for surgery. One was, according to Popsugar, an extreme procedure, while the other was less invasive but required the infant to wear a helmet for 22 hours a day until his first birthday.

The parents went with the latter, and it didn't take long for the dull, white helmet provided by the hospital to get old.

So Jonathan started decorating the helmet in different colors and styles.

"If we were going to be doing this anyway, we might as well have fun, right?" he said to Popsugar. The conversation with strangers quickly goes from Jack's condition to one about style, Jonathan said.

Jack's first helmet was actually a gift inspired by Star Wars character R2-D2 and his dad's love for the fantasy films. Jonathan then painted the next three helmet designs by hand.

While Jack wasn't partial to the helmet, they were a hit with family and friends, his dad said.

Jack is officially helmet-free as of Thursday, but thanks to social media, the helmets are still around to be seen.
