Hillary Clinton : Her run for president

After a long and sometimes bitter battle, Barack Obama has effectively clinched the Democratic nomination ending Hillary Clinton's bid to become the first female president.

Clinton at East High School in Des Moines, Iowa on Jan. 27, 2007 after she formed an exploratory committee in advance of formally announcing her candidacy.

Clinton was the early favorite to win the Democratic nomination thanks to her tenure as first lady and senator and her fundraising organization.

Clinton and her rivals at the CNN, YouTube and Google debate. During the debates, Clinton often had to defend her vote for the Iraq War. She responded by talking about her plan to end the conflict.

Barack Obama became Clinton's main competition as the primaries began. Obama took Iowa, but Clinton came back to win New Hampshire and Nevada.

Georgia Rep. John Lewis originally endorsed Clinton, but later announced that he would support Obama.

Clinton jokes around with reporters on her campaign plane. Clinton said the press was tougher on her than her opponents. However, she showed her funny side during appearances on "Saturday Night Live" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

Clinton speaks about gas prices during a campaign event in South Bend, Ind. Clinton had strong showings in blue collar states such as Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Confetti falls as Clinton claims 67 percent of the vote in West Virginia.

Clinton speaks at a private residence during a fundraiser in Fort Mitchell, Ky. Clinton won about 66 percent of the vote in Kentucky but her late success couldn't make up going a month without winning a state following Super Tuesday.

Clinton endured many calls for her to exit the race, but she kept pressing on and remained steadfast in her ability to grab the nomination until the end.

The former president made many appearances supporting his wife's presidential bid.

"Count every vote," became a saying for Clinton as the she refused to leave the race early, and controversies erupted about how to handle the Michigan and Florida primaries.

Clinton hoists a "Presidente" beer in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Clinton won 68 percent of the vote there.

Clinton speaks to the Argus Leader Editorial Board on May 23 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Dismissing calls for her to drop out of the race, Clinton mentioned that Robert Kennedy was assassinated in June. That comment drew strong criticism.

Clinton laughs with Bill and daughter Chelsea on the trail. Chelsea said she thought her mom would be a better president than her father. Bill concurred.

Supporters of Clinton protest in the neighborhood where the Democratic National Rules and Bylaws Committee meets to determine how to count the primary votes for Michigan and Florida. The states got half their votes, which Clinton protested vehemently.

Clinton pressed on, campaigning in South Dakota on June 2.

"There's more than enough work to do, and we want to harness what is really the genius of our country -- the willingness of our citizens to give of themselves," Hillary Clinton.
