A New Jersey medical examiner has released the cause of a high school quarterback's death last week.
Evan Murray died from a lacerated spleen, according to the Morris County Medical Examiner's Office.
That led to massive internal bleeding, NJ.com reported.
Murray had an enlarged spleen that made it more susceptible to being injured, NJ.com reported.
He had no evidence of head trauma or heart disease. His death was ruled an accident.
Murray, who was Warren Hills Regional High School's starting quarterback for three years, was injured Friday during a high school football game, The Associated Press reported.
The cause of the injury was not released, but teammates said he had taken hard hits before halftime, including a helmet to the stomach.
He walked off of the field under his own power, but he later collapsed, The AP reported.
"The last play before the half, he got hit, and we helped him to the sideline," Oscar Vega said.
He felt woozy after the tackle, but Murray gave a thumbs-up sign before he was loaded into the back of an ambulance, The AP reported.
He was taken to a local hospital, where he died, Lehigh Valley Live reported.
