Heavy rains caused flooding at Western Michigan University's football stadium early Thursday, covering the field in nearly 18 inches of water in some places, MLive reported.
Nearly 4 inches of rain fell overnight in west Michigan, causing flooding on roads in Kalamazoo, WWMT reported. The Thursday morning rains washed over the turf at Waldo Stadium on the university's campus, which was similar to flooding that canceled a football game between the Broncos and Akron on Oct. 14, 2017, the television station reported.
Waldo Stadium has hosted football at Western Michigan since 1939, the Detroit Free Press reported. According to the university's athletic website, FieldTurf has been the stadium's playing surface since 2006.
Adam Bodnar, the university's marketing communications associate director, said the field is nearly water-free, and officials decided not to use pumps to drain the water.
"We've already started the draining process, and we're going to let it go naturally from there," Bodnar told WWMT.
