A 20-year-old Harvard student has confessed to making the fake bomb threat that evacuated campus Monday — all in an effort to avoid a final exam.
Boston's WBZ-TV got its hands on an FBI affidavit with all the details. The suspect is Kim Eldo, who told the FBI he used a product called TOR to obtain a random IP address, then sent anonymous emails with the bomb threat.
According to the affidavit, the emails contained this message: "shrapnel bombs placed in science center, sever hall, emerson hall, thayer hall, 2/4. guess correctly. be quick for they will go off soon." (Via FBI)
That message was sent to the student newspaper, administrators and the Harvard Police Department at about 8:30 a.m. Monday. Eldo's exam was in one of the buildings named — Emerson Hall — at 9 a.m. And he tells the FBI, when he heard the fire alarms ring right at the beginning of that exam, he knew his plan had worked.
The bomb threat shut down all four buildings named in the email and delayed finals for many students. Bomb-sniffing dogs had to be brought in to clear those areas of campus. (Via WCVB)
Eldo wasn't in the clear very long. Authorities were able to see the student had accessed TOR, the IP-randomizing product, Monday morning. That night, an FBI agent and a Harvard officer went to speak with Eldo at his building on campus. (Via Talking Points Memo)
The 20-year-old is due to appear in district court Wednesday. He faces a prison sentence of up to five years.
