An Orange County group says gun-free zones are doing the opposite of what they’re designed to do and the group wants to spread that message outside a movie theater packed with people.
The group sent out fliers with a message discouraging gun-free zones, saying the zones are convenient for criminals.
“I think they endanger people,” said Peter Lee, who helped spread the fliers.
Lee said he and others plan to hand the flyers out during the popular "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" premiere Thursday at the Regal Cinemas movie theater in the Waterford Lakes Town Center.
“The movie theater has a right to demand that there are no guns on their premises. Then again, they’re endangering their customers,” said Lee.
A theater spokesperson said there will be security at the movie theater because of the large crowds that are expected, but couldn’t comment further.
Orange County deputies said they are aware of the flier and said while they recognize the protesters' constitutional rights, they want to ensure public safety.
Waterford Lakes Town Center management said it prohibits weapons on the property so shoppers can stay safe.
The sheriff's office or Regal Cinemas won't say if they will beef up patrols because of the fliers.
