A grandmother says she’s still shocked about a recent assignment her 5-year-old grandson was given to complete for school, calling it “offensive.”
Jackie Druga said for the assignment, her grandson, Aiden, was required to identify a “fat” person who was standing next to a “skinny” person.
She believes the worksheet, however innocent it may have been, is sending the wrong message to children.
“At 5 years old, that should not be an issue. They should be able to look at their fellow students as all the same, no matter what size they are,” said Druga.
Aiden’s mother left a note next to the drawing on the assignment for her son’s South Park kindergarten teacher to see, but Druga thought more should be done. She believes the worksheet is teaching impressionable children to label and bully.
“It starts right there in that grade - period. When they get older, it sticks with them the rest of their lives,” said Druga.
Druga said she contacted the school and received the following email response from the district’s superintendent:
“The worksheet was from an older reading instruction series and was being used by a teacher to supplement phonics instruction. It has been pulled.”
Druga said she hopes by bringing this to light, parents and teachers can talk to students about seeing people for who they are and not how they look.
