A good Samaritan was shot and killed in North Carolina trying to help a motorist who slid off an icy road Friday, authorities said.

Neighbors went to help the driver when the shooting happened, the Catawba County sheriff said.

Officials identified the good Samaritan as Jefferson Heavner, 26, of Newton.

Authorities, along with SWAT team members, surrounded the vehicle on Mathis Church Road, which initiated a standoff that lasted several hours.

Marvin Lee was inside the vehicle and was later arrested and charged with murder in the deadly shooting, police said.

The sheriff said Lee appeared to be intoxicated.

The shooting is under investigation.
