The holidays are here and for many people that means gifts delivered to your front door. But one woman said she was already preyed on by thieves.

A package containing a quilt handmade for her daughter who is battling breast cancer was stolen from the front porch of her home within the Huntersville neighborhood of Tanners Creek.

“I was home with the dog and my other daughter in Florida called me,” said Jean Strohlein. “She asked me if I got the package containing the quilt and I hadn’t. We contacted the post office and they said it had been delivered.”

Strohlein said she was at a loss when suddenly her doorbell rang.

“There was a man standing there with this wet package,” said Strohlein.   “He was a very nice man and told me he found the package in his backyard. It was open and all wet. I’m thinking the thief opened it up thinking it was electronics and then saw what it was and flung it out the window.”

It was a touching yet uncommon ending to a crime that police say often happens during this time of year. Police have suggested asking carriers for signed confirmation or alerting a nearby resident you're expecting a package.
Strohlein hopes her story will put others on high alert.

“It’s just cruel,” said Strohlein. “People are spending their money on gifts for other people and it has special meaning.”

Strohlein was able to get the quilt blessed for her daughter but said she still hopes to get the opportunity to thank the man who returned her package.

“I didn’t even get his name because I was tearing up,” said Strohlein. “I was so glad to get the quilt.”
