An 11-year-old girl died Tuesday morning when heavy storms sweeping across the Midwest felled a tree at the summer camp she was staying at, according to camp officials.
The girl was inside a cabin with three adult counselors when a tree was struck by lighting around 3 a.m. and fell on the cabin, said Jeff Goldstein, vice president and secretary of the board of Camp Livingston in Bennington, Indiana.
"Emergency services arrived shortly after the accident, but she did not survive her injuries," Goldstein said. "The family was notified immediately. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."
The camp did not identify the girl, out of respect for her family.
No other injuries were reported.
Camp Livingston was founded in 1920 and caters to Jewish children and teens between the ages of 7 and 17. It sits on 680 acres of land in southeastern Indiana.
