The family lives in Patterson, Georgia, which is about 95 miles north of Jacksonville.

The lightning strike hit the boy on the left side of his head near his ear.

Jason Tyre rushed into the water after the lightning strike, carried his son to the beach and started resuscitation.

LJ Kuzmovich, a surf instructor who was nearby, jumped into action and performed CPR on the child.

"It's one of those fight or flight (responses), you know? I know what to do. So all right, it's time to help this little guy out," Kuzmovich said. "He didn't have a pulse, and we started our compressions and then he started spitting up and we were able to roll him over."

He was treated in an Orlando hospital before being transferred to rehab, where he's working with occupational and physical therapists.
