The funeral director’s Facebook post says that it is "for just one person” but the message has touched many people.
A funeral director in Texas made the heartfelt plea Wednesday, reaching out to the hit-and-run driver who police say struck and killed 4-year-old Ethan Hernandez in Austin Sunday.
The funeral director writes, “I spent most of the night Monday and Tuesday morning getting this child ready for his mother and father to see him in a casket because of you. I want you to see these pictures and I want you to know how much it pains me to know that you would run over a child and not stop to render aid. What a careless act.”
The funeral director writes how much it hurt to watch the boy’s family grieving and how he took care to prepare the child’s body.
He ends his post by writing, “You know who you are. I have done my duty, now do YOURS and turn yourself in. I should have not had to do a funeral today, and I only have one person to blame for that and that person is YOU. It's your turn.”
Police on Wednesday released images of a pickup truck that investigators believe was involved in the hit-and-run incident.
Hernandez was struck around 5:05 p.m. Sunday by an early 2000s model Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD pickup truck, authorities said.
A preliminary investigation found that the pickup truck was at an intersection when it turned southbound and hit Hernandez, who was walking in the crosswalk with his family, police said.
The driver of the Chevrolet fled the scene, police said.
Hernandez was taken to Dell Children’s Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators are asking for the public to help them find the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado. The truck may be missing a rear brake light, police said.
Anyone with information should call Vehicular Homicide Unit detectives at 512-974-6935.
