A Florida man is under arrest after he allegedly shot a turtle rescue volunteer in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea on Friday.
According to CBS Miami, Michael McAuliffe allegedly approached Stanley Pannanman, a 72-year-old Vietnam veteran who was volunteering with Sea Turtle Overnight Protection. The Associated Press reported that McAuliffe pulled stakes from around a protected nest because "he did not like sea turtles." Pannanman told CBS Miami that McAuliffe started shouting profanity and rushed Pannanman, who pulled out his gun.
McAuliffe responded by taking the gun away from Pannanman and hitting him with it. McAuliffe then shot the victim in the waist, Pannanman said.
“He gets down on one knee and he says, ‘Are you all right?’ and I looked at him and said, ‘Sir, you just shot me! How can I be all right?’ ” Pannanman said. He added that he also cut his head during McAuliffe's alleged attack.
Following the incident, McAuliffe was put in the Broward County Jail, held without bond. He was charged with two counts of aggravated battery with deadly weapon, possession of weapon or ammo by a convicted Florida felon, and battery on a person 65 years of age or older.
