Florida man fatally struck by garbage truck in reverse

A man who was crossing the street in front of his house Friday was struck and killed by a garbage truck that was reversing to pick up a missed can.

Justin Mastry, 44, the manager of a popular bar co-owned by his family, was pronounced dead at the scene, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

Chester Tunsil II, 38, was collecting garbage when he realized that he had forgotten a can three houses back, investigators said. He put the truck in reverse unaware that Mastry was crossing the street.

Alcohol or drug impairment do not appear to be factors, investigators said. The incident is being investigated by the Sheriff's Office, the Florida Highway Patrol and the city of Treasure Island.

"On behalf of the city of Treasure Island, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Mastry family and to all those affected by this tragedy," the city said in a statement, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Mastry was an avid fisher and manager at Mastry's, a bar in St. Petersburg, Florida, according to WTVT.

"He was a St. Pete guy, and that's kind of hard to explain," family friend Jason Gell told the Tampa Bay Times. "He was just a good guy taken way too soon."
