A Kissimmee couple has been arrested for elder abuse.

Raymond Sutherland, 56, and Debbie Sutherland, 54, were booked into the Osceola County jail for neglect and battery of a person over 65 after Raymond's mother was hospitalized with obvious symptoms of abuse, authorities said.

The 81-year-old victim, who is in critical condition, originally told deputies that she had fallen in her bedroom.

She said she "asked her son several times for assistance," but eventually lost consciousness and woke up in a pool of her own blood.

The octogenarian was taken to the hospital after her son called an ambulance "after some time."

Doctors alerted authorities to the abuse injuries.

Raymond Sutherland denied hurting and neglecting his mother during detectives' questioning, but he and his wife were arrested on felony battery charges.

The victim is recovering in a Kissimmee medical rehabilitation center.
