A hospitalized Washington, D.C. firefighter is being hailed as a hero after he removed his oxygen mask to give his lifesaving air to a woman who was being rescued from her burning apartment building.
Danny Lovato helped Phyllis Terrell, 65, get out of her burning home earlier this week.
Terrell was ready to jump from her third-floor window to escape the blaze, WRC reported.
Lovato climbed a ladder to get to Terrell, then removed his mask to give Terrell air until other firefighters could come to their aid, WUSA reported.
"He was in an area where the smoke was really pushing in his face and doing his best trading (the mask) back and forth," Lt. Dan White told WRC.
Lovato and Terrell were admitted to an area hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
Lovato wasn't the only hero at the fire.
Four school resource officers were the first to arrive and entered the building, despite smoke and flames outside the building, WRC reported.
They were able to rescue three older people and a dog before firefighters arrived.
