A Florida family is still reeling from the accidental shooting of a 14-year-old boy.
Stephen Brumby, 14, was accidentally shot by his father Clayton at a Sarasota, Florida, gun range Sunday.
Stephen later died at an area hospital.
Clayton spoke with CNN after the incident.
"We wanted our kids to be aware of guns. I wanted them to be comfortable around them and understand them," Clayton Brumby said.
Officials said that Clayton was trying to get a hot shell casing out of the back of his shirt and pulled the trigger of his handgun. The bullet hit the ceiling then hit his son.
CNN reported that Clayton has accepted responsibility for Stephen's death.
"The gun didn't kill my boy. I did," Clayton said.
"Every round in the gun is your responsibility. When it fires you need to stand to account for it. That's what I've spent the last two days doing, accounting for my operating error."
Clayton had taken Stephen, another 24-year-old son and his 12-year-old daughter to a local gun range. He did that once or twice a month, CNN reported.
More details have come out about Stephen and the kind of person he was.
His father described him as always willing to help his mother. He also was the caregiver and best friend for his youngest sister who was born with spina bifida.
Stephen was being homeschooled by his mother, and his family hoped he would go off to college like his older siblings.
Clayton told CNN that the accident has not changed his view on guns, saying that he will keep them in his home and use them for self-defense of the house and family.
