A Jacksonville man who was bartending at Pulse, an Orlando nightclub that was the scene of a mass shooting, is waiting to go into surgery, his family tells Action News Jax.

Rodney Sumter Jr.'s mother told Action News Jax that her son was hit by bullets in both arms and then shot in the back while running away.

Sumter's family said, "He's in line for surgery. There are so many others in more serious shape" at the hospital.

Sumter's brother Marquel said the father of two is "alive and overwhelmed."

Sumter was a wide receiver for Jacksonville University from 2008 to 2010. In 2010, he caught 24 passes for seven touchdowns. He played prep football at Fletcher High in Neptune Beach.

Action News Jax's Paige Kelton checked in with Sumter's family Sunday night. Sumter's mother said he will have surgery Monday as others who are more seriously injured are going into surgery first.
