Family files $1.5M suit over reported bed bug infestation

A Florida family is suing a rental company after they said they rented a bed that was infested with bed bugs.

The infestation they say was due to the bed rented from Aaron's Furnture was so bad the Teel-Hainey family said they had to throw out all their clothes and furniture.

Andre Teel said their dream home has turned into a nightmare.

"Every so often I'll come up and spray," he said.

He showed WTEV where bedbugs have infested his children's room and he said Aaron's is responsible. According to this agreement, the couple rented "preleased" beds from Aaron's in December.

Soon, their children became sick.

"They're giving her ointments, creams, nothing's helping," said Rebecca Hainey.

Hainey spotted a bed bug on the wall two months ago. Then, she said, she found more bed bugs and their eggs behind built-in drawers under her son's mattress.

Aaron's workers removed a plastic-wrapped bed hours later, but the problem remains.

What wasn't thrown away is now in plastic bags.

"They're going to have to face reality, probably leave this nice home, I would hate to say it, naked, and start their life completely all over," said attorney Eric Jones.

Jones said the only remedy is too expensive for this family, so this month they filed a $1.5 million lawsuit against Aaron's.

WTEV went to the store, but we were told they can't comment on pending litigation. A spokesperson said "every customer concern is taken seriously."

"I don't want any other family to go through this," Teel said.

The couple also put their wedding on hold. They were planning to hold it in the backyard, but they don't want to bring guests into their home in its current state.
