Sandy Springs Gun Club and Range will host the event where families can pose with Saint Nick and their choice of an AK-47, AR-15 or FN-SCAR-17. Gun range co-owner Robyn Workman Marzullo said they have already gotten positive feedback from customers about the upcoming event.

“It’s not trying to send a message,” said Marzullo. “It’s just about having a good time, getting into the holiday spirit and giving back to the community.”

Families are encouraged to bring canned food to the event. All donations will benefit a nearby community center.

“Our customers and the people who support us will love to do something different for the holidays,” said Marzullo.

But the event isn't without its controversy. When posted on Facebook, the story drew hundreds of comments. Many focused on the notion that families are invited. Posters questioned parents who would bring their children. Others called it sickening and sad.

"Firearms are such a hotly debated item that you're going to have people on both sides of the fence and you're going to have opinions flying," said Casey Retterer, who works at the gun range.

One gun club member defended the idea.

"It's for a good cause. It's for charity so I don't see any problem with it whatsoever. If somebody doesn't want to bring their kid here, just don't," said Bret Ciaranella.

Marzullo said safety is their first priority.

“We’re not trying to treat guns like toys,” said Marzullo.

Only people over 18 will be allowed to hold guns for photos with Santa. Children can be in the photos, but can't hold the guns. The guns will be unloaded, and children under 12 will not be allowed past the lobby of the range.
