Trucks helped stop traffic as members of the Mesilla Marshal’s Department, City of Las Cruces Codes Enforcement, Doña Ana County Codes Enforcement and New Mexico University Animal and Range Sciences chased the emu through irrigation canals, residential areas and the interstate before eventually snaring it.

A portion of the chase was captured on video and posted to Facebook. It shows officers trying to surround the bird. One knocks down the bird with a restraining pole, but it gets up and continues to run.
