G4S Secure Solutions, Omar Mateen’s employer, learned in 2013 that the FBI had questioned Mateen but because the inquiry was closed, kept Mateen on the payroll.

“We were not made aware of any alleged connections between Mateen and terrorist activities, and were unaware of any further FBI investigations,” said Monica Lewman-Garcia — the company’s director of communications — in a statement released late Sunday.

Mateen was screened when he was hired on Sept. 10, 2007 and again in 2013 with no findings. Mateen worked at a gated community and was off-duty at the time of the shooting, according to the statement.
