A woman, who was being treated for a serious medical condition, and her husband were found dead with gunshot wounds at the Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos, city officials said.

At 7:49 a.m. on Tuesday, police arrived at the hospital where the woman’s daughter found the couple in her mother’s hospital room.

The man, 87, and the woman, 85, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police now believe the couple died as a result of a murder-suicide.

The man is thought to have shot his wife before killing himself. Investigators didn’t find a note, and none of the hospital staff reported hearing gunshots.

The police chief declined to speculate on whether the shooting was related to the late woman's illness.

San Marcos police officers are still investigating the scene.

Their identities have not been released to the public at this time. A city spokesman said no officers were involved in the shooting and there is no threat to the public.
