It might have taken 30 hours, but the Duquesne University men’s basketball team is finally home after a harrowing ordeal on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The team, which was trying to return to Pittsburgh after leaving Virginia Friday afternoon after a game, got stuck on the turnpike in between Bedford and Somerset at 9 p.m. Friday night.

The bus carrying the team was one of 500 vehicles stranded on the road after a tractor trailer crashed and caused a massive backup.

Saturday was a day none of them will soon forget.

A few team members trekked nearly a mile in two feet of snow in an effort to get pizza delivered to a nearby overpass, while others worked to shovel the bus out from the snow with pizza boxes and trash can lids.

Other members of the team passed their time by walking to a nearby bus full of young students from Iowa, talking to the kids and keeping their spirits up.

The team bus finally started moving again around 7:30 p.m. while the team got back in Pittsburgh after 10:30 p.m., a full 30 hours after leaving Virginia.

But before it was all said and done, the team made sure to thank the bus driver, who they said is the best in the country.
