A Dunkin’ Donuts worker was fatally hit by a vehicle while sweeping leaves in the drive-through lane Thursday night.

A white cargo van sped through the drive-through, striking Jose Furtado, 65, around 7 p.m., according to WABC. Furtado was taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center, where he died.

"Speed no matter where you go, they don't slow down," Furtado's friend, James Reed told WABC. "You know, I think this is a wake-up call for everybody. Everybody knows (Furtado) from Dunkin' Donuts, church folks, church members, no matter who, no matter what race or color or creed they are he'd treat them all the same."

The 59-year-old driver and 15-year-old passenger were not injured.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage.

"No criminal charges have been filed at this time," Passaic County prosecutor Camelia Valdes told the New Jersey Record. "However, the investigation remains active and ongoing."

The Dunkin’ Donuts, a family-owned franchise which is typically open 24 hours, was closed Thursday to mourn the loss of Furtado.
