Two dogs got loose and attacked a horse Wednesday, leaving its face and legs so severely injured they will require surgery, investigators said.
The owners of the two dogs, identified as pit bulls, were issued four summonses for dogs running at large and dogs off premises, nj.com reported. Because the dogs attacked another animal and not a human, there were no other charges filed.
Daren Milne co-owns the horse, named Christy, with his ex-wife and estimated the veterinary bills are already in the thousands. He said the dog’s owners have been very apologetic.
The family is concerned the dogs could attack again.
"I don't know what the right answer is," Milne told nj.com. "I'm an animal lover myself, so the last thing I want is for the dogs to put down. Maybe they should send them somewhere where they can't inflict harm or damage to others, but if it comes down to it, I'm not sure why we should have to live in fear of what those dogs are going to do."
