Update: The dog's death was not the result of being thrown from the truck. A witness misunderstood what she had seen, according to police. The dog died as a result of being hit by a vehicle in front of the truck.

A dog is dead after reportedly being thrown out of a truck on a Tulsa, Okla., highway at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

The vehicle is believed to be a black or dark-colored Ford four door, dually pickup truck. The driver and passenger are unknown.

It happened just two cars in front of Tulsa resident Aubrie Puffenbarger.

“All I could see was the dog being thrown out and immediately hit by another car,” Puffenbarger said. “So it was airborne and then unfortunately hit by another car again.”

Puffenbarger was on her way to a funeral when it happened. She tried to follow the truck but said it took off quickly after the dog was thrown out of the passenger window.

“I did snap a picture but it’s not clear enough to read the license plate,” Puffenbarger said.

Puffenbarger's friend went to check on the condition of the dog and discovered it was dead.

“It was basically butchered, was how she described it,” Puffenbarger said.

The dog is described as a white, medium-sized pit-bull mix.

Puffenbarger, who runs an animal rescue, estimates the dog was between one and three years old.

“It breaks my heart because there’s so many avenues that people can take besides dumping a dog,” Puffenbarger said. “There’s other options out there.”

A post about the incident had nearly 8,000 shares on Facebook Thursday night.
