‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ director signed on to helm live-action ‘Rugrats’ movie

The director of three of the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” movies has signed on to helm the hybrid live-action-animated adaptation “Rugrats,” based on the popular Nicktoon.

David Bowers, director of the second, third and fourth "Wimpy Kid" movies ("Rodrick Rules," "Dog Days" and "The Long Haul"), is expected to direct the latest adventure of Tommy Pickles and company, Variety reported.

Paramount has set a release date of Jan. 29, 2021, for the movie.

"Rugrats," a popular cartoon on Nickelodeon, ran for nine seasons starting in 1991.

A trio of animated movies were also released between 1998 and 2003.
