A man is recovering after he was bitten on the leg by an alligator at the Pine Island Resort campground on Lake George Road in Seville, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies received the call about the attack at about 10 a.m. Sunday.

They said the victim, Kemp Galleneau, an alligator hunter, had a legal tag for the animal and had it next to his boat.

Galleneau fell overboard and the alligator bit him on the left calf, Florida Fish and Wildlife officers said.

Several witnesses told Channel 9 Galleneau fell in the water while trying to harpoon the gator.

The alligator was caught and killed by a trapper.

“He is lucky, real lucky that gator didn’t roll with him and rip that leg off like it did to that woman down there in Wekiva,” said George Pravatt, an avid alligator hunter.

Rachael Lilienthal was swimming in the Wekiva River last August when an alligator bit her arm off at the elbow.

Galleneau was taken to Florida Hospital DeLand and later released.

Deputies said pressure was applied to the man’s wound at the scene to control the bleeding.

FWC is still investigating.
