Stands usually separated by home team and visitor’s side were both filled with sheriff’s deputies showing support for the son of a fallen Cobb County comrade Saturday.
The touching sight of support was almost enough to make Savannah Rae Paul cry, she said, as she stopped into the game between East Paulding and Chapel Hill high schools Saturday night.
“Typically during rival games, you see a lot of police officers to avoid fights,” she said. That was not the reason for the big turnout this time.
Deputy Raymond E. Morrical with the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office passed away on Wednesday.
The 52-year-old, of Dallas, whose obituary says he is survived by his three children and several grandchildren, was regularly at the games to watch his son play.
When East Paulding took on Chapel Hill, the junior’s father was not there as usual, but his colleagues were there in solidarity with the teenager and his family.
“I look up and I just see what feels like hundreds of officers,” Paul said. “I was in such amazement and my heart felt so happy seeing all those officers there supporting Andrew even though his father couldn’t.”
She said that in a tumultuous time in the world, the deputies' presence was a reassurance that there are still good people out there.
Cobb County police officers were also among the group.
Morrical's obituary states memorial donations may be made to East Paulding High School Basketball Team, 3236 Atlanta Highway, Dallas, GA 30157.
