Drivers were shocked when a gurney rolled out of a moving hearse in the middle of a busy intersection.

"I was just parked there, and all of a sudden I saw the funeral car's boot open and something slipping out, and it was a body," one witness, who wished to not be named, told The New Zealand Herald. "It took us a while to comprehend or come to terms with what we were seeing," another said.

The corpse was covered by a sheet but was quickly drenched by heavy rain, the Herald reported.

"It was quite surreal, really," Alison Smith told the Herald. “I thought, 'Why is there a dead person on a gurney in the middle of the intersection?'”

The answer seems to be a bad door latch on the hearse. Pedestrians jumped to help the hearse driver re-load the body but not before leaving many with concern.

"I was just thinking, if that was a member of my family, that would be so disturbing," Smith said.

The funeral service says the body was unharmed, and they are fixing the hearse.
