The parents of conjoined twins Carter and Conner Mirabal say the boys have been separated.
The parents announced the news Monday morning on their Facebook page, Prayers for Carter & Conner.
The boys were separated on May 7 and are in critical but stable condition at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. Carter and Conner have been moved from the NICU to the pediatric intensive care unit, said the twins’ aunt, Jasmine Bell.
Wolfson Children's Hospital said the surgery started at 7:11 a.m. and ended at 3:34 p.m. A team of nearly 200 health care professionals were involved in the surgery, including neonatal and pediatric critical care nurses, pediatric respiratory therapists, rehabilitation therapists, child life specialists and pediatric chaplains.
The team separated the boys’ liver, common bile ducts and small intestines.
“The 24 to 48 hours following surgery were crucial, but the boys are being ably cared for by our PICU team,” Dr. Solange Benjamin, medical director of the PICU, said in a statement. “The twins are still critical but stable at this time, which is expected. Our ultimate goal is to prepare Carter and Conner for their lives as healthy and active boys!”
The parents learned Monday that the boys could be home in about a month.
Both boys weigh about 12 pounds.
The twins had surgery to partially separate their small intestine in early January.
The Mirabal twins were born Dec. 12.
