Gunfire makes for a deadly weekend
Shootings in Chicago during the Fourth of July holiday weekend killed at least nine people and wounded several dozen, including two young boys shot in different parks. One of the shootings Saturday night proved especially violent, killing a man in his late 40s and wounding six others. A 25-year-old man was shot and killed earlier Saturday outside his home. Among those wounded were a 7-year-old boy who was shot Thursday night and a 5-year-old boy who authorities and relatives said has undergone multiple surgeries since being shot in the abdomen early Friday morning in a park. Police have made one arrest. Police said two men — ages 34 and 28 — also were wounded in the Friday shooting.

Secretary Kerry’s wife hospitalized
Teresa Heinz Kerry, the wife of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, was in critical but stable condition Sunday in a hospital in Massachusetts. Heinz Kerry, 74, was admitted into the emergency room Sunday afternoon, hospital spokesman Noah Brown said. Heinz Kerry arrived at the facility in critical condition and remained that way Sunday evening, although doctors had stabilized her, Brown said. Brown said he could not immediately release any more details about the patient’s condition or her illness.

Police kill man in knife rampage
Police in Sweden shot and killed a knife-wielding man after he stabbed three people, including an elderly woman who died of her injuries. The victims were stabbed in the late morning Sunday in different locations in the southwestern town of Varberg. Two men who were attacked survived, but the woman, born in 1928, died. Police shot the man, who was not identified, when he refused to put down the knife. The motive for the rampage was not clear.

Minor blasts target Buddhist site
A series of explosions rocked one of Buddhism’s holiest sites in eastern India on Sunday morning, an attack that officials called an act of terrorism. Two people were wounded in the explosions at the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, officials said. Initial reports suggested that the 12-acre temple complex suffered minimal damage. The soaring main temple, constructed in the fifth or sixth century, is near the Bodhi Tree, where Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment. Investigators have not identified any suspects. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the bombings.

Aleppo shelling kills six prisoners
Shells smashed into a central prison in the embattled Syrian city of Aleppo, killing prisoners, a rights group said Sunday. The explosions killed six prisoners, said the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. It was not clear who fired the shells late Friday. The Observatory reported about 70 soldiers and fighters were killed on Sunday, as well as 40 civilians, in fighting across Syria.

Solar powered plane finishes journey
A solar-powered aircraft completed the final leg of a history-making cross-country flight, gliding to a smooth stop at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The Solar Impulse touched down at JFK at 11:09 p.m. Saturday, completing the cross-continental journey that started in California in early May. For Saturday’s final leg, the aircraft left Dulles International Airport a little before 5 a.m.
