Colorado theater shooter James Holmes has been sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole on all counts.
The sentence was the result of the jury being unable to reach a unanimous decision.
It took the jury 6.5 hours to finish deliberations. Jurors began deliberating late Thursday, after the final round of closing arguments.
Prior to calling the jury to the courtroom, the judge called on courtroom observers to use restraint and not have emotional outbursts upon the reading of the verdict.
The jurors, comprised of nine women and three men, were required to vote unanimously in order to sentence Holmes to death.
The prosecution argued in favor of the death penalty, pointing to the number of casualties and the documented planning behind the lethal 2012 attack. The defense sought to spare Holmes’ life by focusing on his mental illness.
Holmes was convicted of murdering 12 people and attempting to murder 70 others three years ago inside a midnight “Batman” movie screening in suburban Denver.
