Charlotte Douglas International Airport officials are using one million worms to eat leftover food.

The airport started planning to use the worms for composting since 2011 and finally received the new composting permit they've been waiting on.

The worms will eat trash from the airport and the waste will be used to fertilize the airport grounds.

Airport officials hope to make money to cover the cost of the $1 million center by selling recyclable goods separated from the trash and by making worm compost with food scraps.

Last year, the recycling center diverted about 2,500 tons of waste from the landfill, reducing the airport's landfill fees by 24 percent.
