Dylann Storm Roof, in the custody of the FBI, has arrived back in South Carolina, where he faced charges connected with the mass shooting of nine people at a historic black church in Charleston Wednesday.
Roof was captured and arrested Thursday during a traffic stop in Shelby, North Carolina, about 45 miles from the shooting scene in Charleston, Chief Greg Mullen said. He says Roof was cooperative with the officer who stopped him. Local police in Shelby made the arrest. Mullen says Roof was in the car when arrested.
In a press briefing, President Barack Obama expressed his anger surrounding the shooting.
He said Wednesday night's shooting inside a historic black church shows the need for a national reckoning on gun violence in America.
The sister of former North Carolina Sen. Malcolm Graham was killed in the shooting.
Authorities had been searching for Dylann Roof, the man alleged to be involved in a shooting that left nine people dead at a historic black church Wednesday.
The FBI confirmed Thursday Roof, 21, of Lexington County, is the suspect authorities say shot six women and three men during a service at Emanuel AME Church.
Officials say they don't know the motive for the man suspected of killing nine people inside the historically black church in Charleston.
