A 31-year-old Denver woman died during a hike near Mount Yale, in the Sawatch Range in Colorado, when she and her new husband were struck by lightning.
Kathleen Barlett’s husband, Ryan Pocius, 32, was hospitalized in critical condition after the lightning strike.
The lightning hit about 2 p.m. at about 12,500 feet up, about 2,000 feet below the summit, according to a local report.
It took search crews more than two hours to reach the couple, in part because of stormy weather conditions.
Another pair of hikers — a father and son from Colorado Springs — were also hit by lightning around the same time, but their injuries were minor and they were able to walk out safely.
