A Fresno, California, boy was hospitalized Monday after being struck by a hit-and-run driver moments after pushing his younger brother out of harm's way.
Seven-year-old Davon Mitchell was walking in a crosswalk a few blocks from his home when a driver nearly hit him.
"The light in front of it was red and then the car turned and then it was going to hit my brother so I pushed him out of the way," Dashawn Mitchell told KSEE.
Now 9-year-old Dashawn is still recovering in the hospital. He has a broken left femur, a swollen temple and bruised lungs.
Sussess Whitmore, the boys' aunt, said her nephews "know how to cross the street and everything. It was just a reckless driver that was driving."
The boys' mother, Shawnnika Peters, is proud of her son.
"We try to teach him to be a protector to his younger siblings because he is the oldest and being the first born you have to kind of look out and watch out after your younger siblings," Peters said. "So it made me happy to hear that he saved my baby."
Davon considers his older brother his hero. "At school, they (gave me an assignment asking) who's my hero and I picked my brother."
The family wants the driver responsible for the hit-and-run to come forward.
