A baseball field in Connecticut is closed and now may need $50,000 in repairs after someone set the infield on fire in what seems to be an attempt to dry it out.
The baseball field at Ridgefield High School was doused with 24 gallons of gasoline and set on fire according to WTNH the day after it rained.
In a tweet from @AmityNorton, people can be seen attempting to put out the fire.
Police and a hazmat group responded to the incident to help put out the fire as well as test and remove the soil, which official told WVIT may cost more than $50,000.
The town of Ridgefield posted on Facebook more on the incident:
There as been an incident in town that we want make citizens aware of. A RHS baseball game at Governor Park was delayed due to weather conditions on the field this morning. A poor decision was made (and being looked into by the RPD) to "dry the field quicker" and 24 gallons of gasoline was poured and set on fire. Thanks to the RFD, Peter Hill the Director of Public Works, DEEP, the RPD, and our Certified Spill Response Team for their incredible help. No one was injured and no one is in danger. The plan is to excavate the infield, place dirt in a safe container, and add fresh, clean soil to the field. We will update you as we know more."
The baseball game has been delayed because of the incident.
