Okaloosa County sheriff’s deputies found the child around 9:30 p.m. Sunday while responding to a 911 call at a home in Mary Esther.

Deputies said that family members didn’t realize that the baby’s mother left the infant in a rear-facing car seat. The baby was left in the seat around 12:45 p.m., after family members went to church.

Temperatures in the area reached 90 degrees Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Authorities did not say whether the infant’s death was heat-related.

Authorities continued to investigate the case Monday.
